Taste of Prague -This tour is not to be missed when visiting the city of Prague for the first time.

The Taste of Prague, tasteofprague.com, offers many tours but the one I focused on and chose was the Prague food tour.  The owners Zuzi & Jan call themselves “dedicated Prague foodies” and take you where the locals love to eat and drink.  Martin was our tour foodie guide and he was fantastic.  His knowledge of food as well as the history of Prague had our little tour group singing his praises within the first 30 minutes.  The food was different, unique, and yes I’m going to say it…..delicious.  The tour was 4 hours long and zipped by as we tried the local cuisine, visited a wine bar, & one of the well-known beer halls.  I highly recommend this tour, it really gives you a flavor of the Czech cuisine and its history of food and nation.

Open-faced celery root sandwich & a beet root pureed sandwich with goat cheese and a carmelized walnut.  Both were amazing flavors put out by the restaurant Sisters Bistro in Old Town

Although this slab of ham with mayo & horseradish sauce looks a little simple, I didn’t judge a book by its cover with this plate, the ham was surprisingly tasty.  On the other hand the pickled cheese was not as tasty (insert yuck face)

Nase Maso butcher shop.  This stop was not for vegetarians (our group had none) but for those who love meat this shop gave us samples of meatloaf on rye bread, Debrecen sausage, and steak tartare.  Everything here was fresh and delicious.   The butcher shop is also in Old Town at Dlouha 39 street.

The beer halls in Prague are an easy way to enjoy a meal while you consume as much beer as you want.  Beer is very inexpensive in Eastern Europe and is the drink of choice for the Czech people as well as the many tourists that visit Prague annually. Another Czech speciality is their beer spa treatments where you can relax in a bubbling tub of one of their acclaimed beers.  Alas… I unfortunately saw this to late, no beer spa day for me (insert sad face)

This was Martin, foodie extraordinaire.  We finished the tour at the Eska restaurant & Bakery (Pernerova 49).  This restaurant is re-discovering old methods of fermentation, drying, wood-heating and fire roasting.

This restaurant houses its own bakery and the bread…the butter…what a treat!

This was a favorite with the group entitled burnt potato in ash with potato espuma.  Martin explained that most of the food preparation/recipes comes from old recipes & memories, like your grandmothers dumplings or goulash but this memory brings to mind his days in scouting when they would roast potatos in the fire.

This dish can be found under the title – Fermented red wheat with sous-vide egg and button mushrooms.  I would order this again, very flavorful.
